Here is a recent adventure that a NWP member, Val had with a few friends out in Gold Butte……
Frank Davenport, my golden retriever “Oro”, and I had a splendid time and the weather couldn’t have been better. We set up base camp across from Tramp Mine and hiked up Tramp Ridge and walked the ridgeline, making a loop back to camp. Along the ridgeline we came across mine claims, caryn piles, good views of Mud Hills, and saw two amazing birds of prey, huge wing spans, circling very close (too bad I don’t know my birds), views were breathtaking but another range separated us from more expansive views.

On Sunday, we headed to Gold Butte town site…now we have to go seek out the history in the Nevada Collections we are intrigued. There were about 50 plastic cones with sunken water bottles…any idea what these are? Anyone know how the road from Gold Butte site to the Lake is? Would like to go there in the future. Next we headed to Lime Canyon down Old Gold Butte Rd. We thoroughly enjoyed hiking Lime Canyon, so glad this area has been designated Wilderness and chained up. Continuing north on Old Gold Butte Rd. we came to the beautiful Red Rocks area and incredible views. We found the cut off to Devil’s Throat and recognized the area that Nancy took us too in December.
On Monday, we walked a ridgeline heading west from Whitney Pockets, outstanding views of gorgeous multicolor rock formations…red, purples, yellow, blond, views of the lake and continuation of the road we were on the day before. From this vantage we could see east to Whitney Pass and identified Billy Goat Peak. Snow is still present on the north side of Virgin Peak. We had intentions to hike Little Virgin Peak and visit Mines in the area on the way out…but missed the turnoff and Oro was showing his age and not wanting to be accused of elder abuse…we headed home.
Only my second time visiting Gold Butte…utterly amazed at the vastness, wildness, and diversity. Thanks for all you do to protect this treasure!
